A good will alone possesses unconditional moral value

Nothing in the world can be called good without qualification except a good will. Talents of the mind, courage, and wealth are desirable, but they become evil when guided by a corrupt intent. Moral worth arises not from the consequences or success of an action, but solely from acting out of duty. A shopkeeper who charges fair prices out of self-interest acts in accordance with duty, yet lacks true moral worth unless duty itself dictates the action.

Moral laws command universally through categorical imperatives

Imperatives direct rational beings either hypothetically, for a specific purpose, or categorically, as absolute moral demands. The fundamental law of morality requires acting only on maxims that can be willed as universal law. Human beings exist as ends in themselves, never merely as means to be used for another's gain. A rational community forms a kingdom of ends when every individual acts as both legislator and subject under universal moral laws.

Freedom of the will is the necessary precondition for morality

A rational will cannot act except under the idea of freedom, making moral autonomy identical to a free will. Rational beings belong simultaneously to the sensible world of physical cause and the intelligible world of reason. Duty binds because individuals view themselves as members of the intelligible world, where pure practical reason gives the law. Complete knowledge of how freedom is possible remains beyond human understanding, yet morality demands assuming its reality.
