Faust and his pedantic assistant Wagner join crowds of citizens celebrating Easter outside the town walls. While Wagner despises common plebeian pastimes, Faust admires the simple vitality of the folk who praise his late father's medical cures. Yet Faust admits to harboring two distinct souls within his chest: one clinging to physical earth, the other striving toward spiritual infinity.
A stray black poodle follows Faust home from his walk and grows unnaturally restless in the study. Mephistopheles offers Faust worldly pleasure, magic, and boundless experience in exchange for post-mortem servitude. Faust accepts a wager signed in blood: if he ever tells a fleeting moment to freeze because it is perfect, he forfeits his soul immediately. Bound by this contract, Faust casts off academic robes to venture out into the living world.
Mephistopheles takes Faust to a lively tavern where carousing students drink and sing coarse songs. Using dark magic, the devil bores holes in the wooden table and pours whatever wine each student requests. The illusion breaks when spilled wine ignites into fire and the drunkards draw knives, leaving Faust utterly disgusted by such shallow revelry.
Mephistopheles leads Faust into a dark cave filled with grotesque apes and boiling cauldrons to undergo physical transformation. Faust encounters Margaret, a virtuous young woman returning from church confession, and impetuously offers her his arm. Margaret curtly rejects his advances, which only intensifies Faust's sudden obsession. He demands that Mephistopheles procure her immediately, threatening to break their pact if he cannot possess her that very night.
Mephistopheles guides Faust into Margaret's bedroom while she is away, leaving behind a casket of fine jewelry. Margaret's local priest praised the gift while confiscating the treasure for religious funds, leaving Margaret intrigued yet empty-handed. Demanding another conquest, Faust orders his demonic companion to procure a second, grander jewel casket.
Margaret shows her new jewels to her neighbor Marthe Schwerdtlein, who advises her to keep them hidden from her mother. Mephistopheles arrives with fake news that Marthe's long-absent husband has died penniless abroad. To verify the story legally, Mephistopheles promises to bring Faust as a second witness, arranging an evening meeting in Marthe's private garden.
Faust hesitates when Mephistopheles demands that he bear false witness regarding the death of Marthe's husband. Mephistopheles mocks Faust's moral posturing, reminding him that he routinely preaches about concepts he does not truly understand. Unable to resist his passion for Margaret, Faust agrees to lie to facilitate their garden rendezvous.
Faust walks with Margaret while Mephistopheles entertains Marthe in the garden. Plucking a flower, Margaret plays the 'he loves me, loves me not' petal game, ending on joyful confirmation of Faust's love. Meanwhile, Faust promises her devotion, though his underlying drive remains rooted in passionate possession.
Faust and Margaret embrace inside a garden shed, sharing a brief moment of intense affection away from chaperones. Mephistopheles abruptly interrupts them, insisting that night is falling and it is time to depart. Margaret is left alone, marvelling at what a scholar like Faust could possibly see in an uneducated girl like herself.

Yet Mephistopheles invades his solitude, mocking his idealist pretense and reigniting Faust's intense physical longing for Margaret. Faust succumbs to temptation once again, accepting that his destructive path will likely crush Margaret's peaceful life.

Margaret places fresh flowers in a wall niche before an image of the Mater Dolorosa, the sorrowful Virgin Mary. She pours out her heart in desperate prayer, begging for salvation from her overwhelming shame and impending ruin. The mounting horror of public scandal and hidden grief leaves her entirely helpless.
Margaret's brother Valentin, a proud soldier, waits outside her house to avenge his family's dishonor. He ambushes Faust and Mephistopheles, but Mephistopheles magically parries his blade, allowing Faust to deliver a fatal sword thrust. As Valentin dies on the street, he publicly curses Margaret as a whore, stripping away her remaining dignity.
Margaret attends mass in a crowded cathedral while an Evil Spirit whispers relentless accusations in her ear. The solemn organ music and Latin chanting of the Dies Irae amplify her panic over her mother's death, her brother's murder, and her unborn child. Overwhelmed by guilt, terror, and suffocating anxiety, Margaret collapses unconscious onto the cathedral floor.
Mephistopheles takes Faust to the Harz Mountains on May Eve to join the wild revels of witches and spirits. They dance amid chaotic flames and eerie apparitions on the Brocken summit. In the middle of the orgiastic frenzy, Faust sees a pale apparition of Margaret with a thin red line across her throat, shattering the distraction and filling him with remorse.
