Obligation to work outweighs even bodily horror

Gregor Samsa wakes to find himself transformed into a monstrous insect, yet his primary panic centers entirely on missing his morning train. His family and employer demand his prompt presence, entirely blind to his physical collapse. When he finally unlocks the door with his mandibles to present himself, his voice has become a harsh hiss. The sight drives his boss away in terror and forces his father to beat him back into isolation with a walking stick.

Alienation degrades emotional ties into cold tolerance

Confined to a single room, Gregor discovers that fresh food nauseates him while rotting scraps offer quiet sustenance. His sister Grete initially cares for his needs, though she avoids looking at his repulsive form by keeping the window open. As the family takes on grueling labor to survive without his earnings, sympathy slowly turns to resentment. A misunderstanding over cleared furniture ends when his father furiously assaults him with thrown apples, leaving one embedded in his flesh to fester.

Family survival requires the total elimination of burden

Severe injury and systemic neglect leave Gregor weak, while three demanding lodgers occupy the family apartment. Drawn out by Grete playing the violin, his unexpected appearance ruins the boarders' tenancy and pushes his sister to insist that the creature must be removed. Gregor retreats to his dark room and dies alone before sunrise. Freed from his presence, the Samsa family takes a train ride into the bright suburban countryside to plan a new future.
