Dying veterans carry forgotten glory into forgotten graves

In a meager Milanese cottage, the old Napoleonic soldier Vittore lies dying while dressed in his former uniform. As a priest performs last rites, Vittore's comrade Lorenzo arrives to recount shared battles from Imola to the Russian snows. The stranger reveals that Damiano died a hero fighting for freedom in Montevideo, leaving the family with the bitter solace of his enduring noble spirit.
