Two prominent colleges in Pathanamthitta district -- Catholicate College in Pathanamthitta and Mar Thoma College in Thiruvalla -- will launch their year-long platinum jubilee celebrations on October 1.
At Catholicate College, the celebrations will be inaugurated at 2.30 p.m. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan will inaugurate the function, which will be presided over by Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III. Higher Education Minister Roji M John will launch the platinum jubilee projects.
The college has lined up 12 signature programmes through various departments, scholarships for 75 students, a global alumni meet, Jnanotsavam, seminars, a volleyball tournament and a survey of Pathanamthitta led by the Department of History. Development initiatives involving teachers, non-teaching staff, parents, alumni and the wider community are also planned.
At Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla, the platinum jubilee celebrations will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister at 4 p.m. Thiruvalla MLA and college alumnus Varghese Mamman, college manager Euyakim Mar Coorilos Suffragan Metropolitan and filmmaker and alumnus Blessy Ipe Thomas will attend the function as special guests. Former principals, teachers and alumni, besides prominent personalities from various fields, will also be present.
As part of its platinum jubilee, the college has drawn up a comprehensive development plan focusing on infrastructure, academic excellence, technological innovation and social commitment. The projects include a Platinum Jubilee Block with a skill development centre and administrative facilities, a renovated library, a solar power project, a modern computer lab and an upgraded sports stadium.
Two new courses, academic seminars, exhibitions, literary and science festivals, a global alumni meet, a 5K run, scholarships and various social outreach programmes are also planned.
