Hospitable encounters can bind an observer to dangerous outlaws

A French archaeologist traveling through Andalusia meets the notorious bandit Don José at an isolated spring and protects him from an ambush. Later in Cordova, the narrator encounters Carmen, a mysterious gipsy woman who lures him home under the pretense of fortune-telling. When Don José interrupts them and Carmen demands the narrator be killed, José spares him out of gratitude. The narrator escapes with his life, only to discover his pocket watch missing and José facing execution.

Passion easily dismantles duty and drags an honorable soldier downward

Imprisoned Don José recounts his fall from a Basque soldier to an outlaw after meeting Carmen at a Seville tobacco factory. Her playful provocation and wild charm lead him to deliberately allow her escape following a knife fight. Demoted and mesmerized, José sacrifices his military career, succumbs to her manipulation, and eventually slays an officer in a fit of jealousy. Forced to flee the city, he abandons his former code of honor to join her band of mountain smugglers.

CHAPTER III

Absolute personal freedom cannot survive the possessiveness of obsession

Don José slays Carmen’s husband in a duel and claims her as his own, yet her unyielding desire for independence keeps them divided. When Carmen turns her affections toward the picador Lucas, José begs her to flee with him to America for a fresh start. Refusing to live under any man's control or lie about her feelings, Carmen accepts her predicted death. José stabs her in a secluded gorge, buries her ring beside her, and surrenders to the authorities.
