Orlando defeats the champion wrestler Charles, earning Duke Frederick's instant hostility but winning Rosalind's heart. Threatening her popularity, Frederick banishes Rosalind from court on pain of death. Celia refuses to part from her beloved cousin, orchestrating their flight into the Forest of Arden. Adopting the male persona Ganymede, Rosalind transforms exile into a space of dangerous liberty.
ACT I → SCENE III. A Room in the Palace
Duke Senior embraces forest living, finding honest truth in nature rather than courtly flattery. Warned by the loyal servant Adam of Oliver’s plot to burn him alive, Orlando flees into Arden carrying the exhausted old man. Stumbling upon Duke Senior's banquet with a drawn sword, Orlando receives generous hospitality instead of violence. Meanwhile, the melancholy Jaques mocks human ambition and laments the wounding of wild deer.
ACT II → SCENE VII. Another part of the Forest
Orlando carves love verses into tree bark across the forest, advertising his passion for Rosalind. Disguised as the youth Ganymede, Rosalind encounters her suitor and promises to cure his madness through satirical roleplay. By instructing Orlando to woo Ganymede as Rosalind, she scrutinizes his romantic idealism behind a protective mask. Simultaneously, Touchstone pursues the country wench Audrey, bringing cynical court wit into rustic romance.
ACT III → SCENE V. Another part of the Forest
Rosalind subjects Orlando to a mock wedding, warning him of marital volatility before he departs to attend the Duke. Oliver arrives in the forest bearing a blood-stained handkerchief to explain Orlando's delay. Orlando rescued his tyrannical brother from a lurking lioness, sustaining wounds that prompt Oliver's moral conversion. Seeing Ganymede faint at the blood, Oliver suspects the youth's delicate nature, while romantic entanglements multiply across the forest.
ACT IV → SCENE III. Another part of the Forest
Rosalind promises to untangle every romantic knot through magical means, gathering all lovers before Duke Senior. Shedding her disguise as Ganymede, she fulfills her vows, uniting four couples under the blessing of Hymen. News arrives that Duke Frederick abandoned his army after meeting a holy hermit, voluntarily restoring the dukedom to Duke Senior. Jaques departs for monastic contemplation, leaving the courtly exiles to return home in celebration.
