When King Artaxerxes demands their unconditional surrender of arms through the Greek envoy Phalinus, Clearchus and his fellow generals flatly refuse. The Greeks recognize that their weapons are their sole leverage, maintaining an uneasy truce while refusing either to surrender or retreat in weakness.

Blockaded from sailing home by Spartan officials at Byzantium, the army marches into Thrace to take service under Prince Seuthes. At a lavish Thracian banquet where guests offer horses and silver bowls, Xenophon navigates political expectations despite having no personal wealth. The Greeks endure harsh winter campaigns to recapture Seuthes's realm, only to realize their employer plans to withhold their promised pay.

Leaders Must Secure Promised Reward for Their Soldiers

Medosades attempts to expel the Greeks without compensation, prompting Xenophon to deliver a fierce defense of the army's moral right to their wages. He reminds Seuthes that royal power relies entirely on keeping one's word and maintaining trust with those who conquered the land for him. The Spartans intervene, forcing Seuthes to settle the debt before Xenophon hands the remaining troops over to join Spartan campaigns in Asia.
