High Altitude Exploration Across Uncharted Himalayan Passes

Arnold Henry Savage Landor leads his small party of bearer Chandan Sing and loyal servants across high, frozen Himalayan passes to bypass official Tibetan border posts. Armed with aneroid barometers and scientific instruments, Landor maps uncharted mountain terrain despite altitude sickness, extreme cold, and desertions by local porters. The journey establishes geographical measurements around the sacred lakes of Mansarowar and Rakstal before pushing deeper into forbidden territory.

Capture and Torture by Tibetan Authorities Near Lhasa

Betrayed by local guides while attempting to reach Lhasa, Landor and Chandan Sing are surrounded and bound by Tibetan soldiers. Captors inflict severe flogging on Chandan Sing and place Landor in wooden torture frames, tightening wet rawhide ropes until they cut into his flesh. Exposed to hot irons, a spiked saddle, and a simulated execution with a broadsword, Landor refuses to confess to espionage or sign forced declarations.

Rescue and Return Across the Frontier to British India

Intercession by Tibetan officials, fearing diplomatic retaliation from British India, spares Landor from execution and results in his eventual expulsion. Badly injured, semi-blind from torture, and stripped of most equipment, Landor is escorted back toward the frontier. British officers and medical missionary Dr. Harkewal Wilson receive the survivors, documenting their injuries and recovering Landor's hidden notes and photographic plates.
