Alice follows a White Rabbit wearing a waistcoat down a dark burrow, entering a realm where familiar physics no longer apply. Consuming liquids and cakes marked with cryptic commands alters her physical stature dramatically. The drop forces her to navigate a subterranean hall filled with locked doors, establishing a universe where logic is inverted and curiosity dictates survival.
Crying after expanding to nine feet high, Alice creates a massive saltwater lake that swallows her when she shrinks back down. Swimming alongside a Mouse and other displaced creatures, she tries to initiate conversation using schoolbook French and lessons on cats. Her standard Victorian knowledge continuously fails to establish common ground, turning basic communication into an existential hazard.
To dry off after swimming, the Mouse leads the wet animals through a Caucus-race with no clear start line, fixed course, or formal timer. Everyone runs in circles and everyone wins a prize, which Alice must provide from her own pockets. The Mouse then recites a visual mouse-tail poem about court trials, highlighting how social rituals and language can sound formal while lacking coherent purpose.
Searching for the White Rabbit's lost gloves and fan, Alice drinks from another bottle inside his house and grows until her limbs burst through the windows. The Rabbit and his household panic, attempting to burn the house down before sending Bill the lizard up the chimney. Alice repels the attack and eats small pebble-cakes to shrink, escaping into the woods as a target of animal fear.
Sitting atop a mushroom, a blue Caterpillar smoking a hookah demands that Alice explain her rapidly shifting identity. Her inability to recite memorized school rhymes correctly demonstrates how unstable her self-knowledge has become. By explaining that different sides of the mushroom cause growth and shrinkage, the Caterpillar gives her the tool to consciously manage her physical size.
Entering a chaotic kitchen filled with pepper, Alice encounters a sneezing Duchess, a grinning Cheshire Cat, and a cook hurling heavy pots. The Duchess hands over a howling infant that transforms into a pig in Alice's arms, forcing her to release it into the wild. Speaking with the floating Cheshire Cat, she learns that sanity in Wonderland is a relative condition shared by everyone present.
Alice joins the March Hare, the Hatter, and a sleeping Dormouse at a table set for many guests but trapped in perpetual tea-time. Time itself has stopped moving because the Hatter offended it, leaving the group stuck cycling through dirty dishes and unanswerable riddles. Alice attempts to engage with their linguistic paradoxes until their rude, circular reasoning drives her to walk away in disgust.
Entering the royal garden, Alice meets living playing-cards painting white roses red to appease the short-tempered Queen of Hearts. The Queen demands constant executions while hosting a croquet game played with live flamingos as mallets and rolled hedgehogs as balls. As the court degenerates into chaotic screams, the Cheshire Cat's detached head appears above the field, baffling the executioner.
The Duchess escorts Alice to meet the Gryphon and the weeping Mock Turtle, who mourns a past he barely experienced. They discuss their sea-based school curriculum, punning relentlessly on classical subjects like Arithmetic, Reduction, and Distraction. The encounter exposes how Victorian educational authority relies on dead formulas and sentimental nostalgia rather than actual understanding.
The Mock Turtle and the Gryphon demonstrate the Lobster Quadrille, a bizarre beachfront dance involving thrown shellfish and complex, theatrical steps. They sing whimsical songs about soup and lobsters, pressing Alice to recite verses that instantly twist into absurdities about sluggards and owls. This spectacle reveals how artistic forms and social dances can be both strictly structured and completely nonsensical.
Alice attends the trial of the Knave of Hearts, presided over by the King and Queen in a courtroom packed with animal witnesses. The Hatter delivers incoherent testimony while holding a half-eaten piece of bread and butter, and the jury writes down nonsense on their slates. As Alice begins growing back to her normal height, the court relies on fraudulent evidence and arbitrary rules to secure a conviction.
Summoned to testify, Alice refuses to obey the King's newly invented Rule Forty-Two, which orders everyone over a mile high to leave the court. When the Queen demands a verdict before the jury deliberates, Alice openly rejects their legal authority, declaring them nothing but a pack of cards.
