Overwhelmed by remorse and fear, Ainley envisions the fatal plunge he inadvertently caused through his deceitful plotting.

Hubert Stane rescued Helen Yardely after her canoe drifted, and the pair travel together while discussing Stane's past conviction. A treacherous half-breed steals their canoe and vital supplies during the night, stranding them deep in the bush. Fearing the deadly rapids downriver, Helen chooses an arduous foot trek through dense timber over building a risky timber raft. They pack light loads and set out on foot, determined to reach safety through sheer endurance.

Delirious confessions stir unexpected jealousy in the forest camp

Stane suffers from a feverish head wound, leaving Helen to nurse him inside their improvised camp tent. In his delirium, Stane mutters Gerald Ainley's name alongside that of Miskodeed, a striking native woman from the trading post. The mention sparks an instinctual wave of resentment in Helen, though she treats his injuries with wild balsam gum. Upon regaining clarity, Stane dispels her suspicions, deepening the unacknowledged bond growing between them.

A raging forest fire demands ultimate physical sacrifice

A wildfire sweeps through the timber, trapping Stane and Helen against a lake shoreline. With Stane unable to walk on his injured leg, Helen carries him on her back to the water and constructs a rudimentary log raft. She poles the crude craft into open water just as trees burst into flames along the banks. Safely across, they establish a new camp where Helen successfully hunts a woodland caribou, proving her resourcefulness.

Trooper Richard "Dandy" Anderton of the Mounted Police arrives at their winter shelter and recognizes Stane from Oxford. Anderton reveals that another peer suspected Ainley of forging cheques, matching Stane's long-held suspicions. Stane presents a recovered sheet of practice handwritings showing Ainley rehearsing a victim's signature alongside Stane's own. Armed with proof of Ainley's past framing and his current involvement with local criminals, the men prepare to track down answers.

Following a bloody skirmish at a burning cabin, Stane learns that Miskodeed gave her life to defend him from hostile native attackers. Trapper Jean Bènard grieves deeply over Miskodeed, placing her wrapped body in a traditional aerial tree burial. Interrogating Chief George reveals that Gerald Ainley bribed native renegades with rifles and supplies to kidnap Helen and eliminate Stane. Driven by grief and vengeance, Stane and Bènard set out on the trail of the conspirators.

A blinding blizzard stalls pursuit and uncovers wounded prey

Stane struggles through a furious snowstorm to locate Helen, eventually reaching a sheltered campfire guarded by Trooper Anderton. The storm halts all movement across the frozen lake, forcing both men to wait out the deadly cold under a rocky bluff. Anderton rescues a wounded half-breed named Chigmok from the drifts, who was shot by his white co-conspirator to erase witnesses. Chigmok's injury confirms Ainley's ruthless attempt to cover his tracks by killing his own mercenaries.

Part 8

A villain takes the long trail into the fatal storm

Confronted with Chigmok's testimony and Stane's evidence, Gerald Ainley collapses in defeat and writes a complete confession clearing Stane. Rather than face trial and gallows, Ainley slips away into an overwhelming blizzard without winter gear or dogs. Trooper Anderton and Jean Bènard track him into the storm but find no trace, leaving him to perish in the arctic cold. Stane and Helen, exonerated and reunited, turn toward a shared future free of shadow.
