Falling through a cavern floor reveals a hollow earth

Niels Klim descends into a deep cavern on Mount Fløyen outside Bergen and plummets into an underground universe. Suspended in space beneath the Earth's crust, he briefly orbits the subterranean planet Nazar like a satellite before landing on its surface. The subterranean cosmos mirrors the outer world, complete with its own central sun and revolving celestial bodies.

Plant life thinks slowly while rapid impulse brings disaster

Planet Nazar is populated by Potuans, sentient walking trees whose physical movement and thought processes are exceptionally deliberate. Speed of thought is viewed by Potuans as rashness and instability, making slow reflection the highest civic virtue. Because Klim moves and speaks faster than the native inhabitants, the trees view him as an erratic youth suited only for running errands.

Meritocracy treats gender equality as self-evident civic wisdom

In Potu, political offices and social rank are awarded entirely on individual capacity without regard to sex. Women serve as ministers, judges, and scholars whenever their intellect exceeds that of male candidates. When Klim submits a proposal to bar women from public office, the council rejects his foolish ambition and sentences him to exile.

Shallow vanity turns absurd fashions into absolute power

Banished to the land of Martinia, Klim encounters intelligent monkeys who prize superficial novelties and rapid speech. By introducing the European wig, he gains vast wealth and high status among inhabitants obsessed with fleeting fashions. His conquest of power eventually collapses when tyranny provokes rebellion, forcing his narrow escape back to the surface world near Bergen.
