Nora Helmer plays the role of a naive, pampered wife to satisfy her husband Torvald's need for control, hiding a secret loan she secured years earlier to save his life. Her friend Christine Linde arrives seeking work, prompting Nora to reveal her illegal financial dealing and her pride in managing the debt. When Krogstad, the disgraced bank clerk who lent Nora the money, faces dismissal from Torvald, he threatens to expose Nora's forgery of her father's signature unless she protects his career.

ACT I

Desperate attempts to maintain illusions accelerate an impending crisis.

Nora tries desperately to dissuade Torvald from firing Krogstad, but her husband dismisses her pleas as narrow-minded interference and sends the formal termination notice. Meanwhile, Doctor Rank reveals his terminal illness and confesses his secret love for Nora, preventing her from asking him for financial assistance. Krogstad returns and drops an incriminating letter into the Helmers' locked mailbox, leaving Nora frantic as she dances the tarantella to distract Torvald from opening it.

ACT II

True autonomy requires shattering comfortable lies and patriarchal control.

Christine Linde rekindles her past romance with Krogstad, convincing him to abandon his blackmail, though she insists the secret must be revealed for the marriage's sake. When Torvald reads the letter, he berates Nora for ruining his reputation, only to instantly forgive her when a second letter returns the forged bond. Realizing Torvald views her merely as a pet and property rather than a full person, Nora sheds her costume, rejects his forgiveness, and leaves her family to seek her own independence.
